Invalides

The Hotel des Invalides was originally founded by Louis XIV to shelter 7,000 aged or crippled soldiers. The enlarged project was completed in 1676, the front measured 196 metres and had fifteen courtyards, the largest being the court of honour for military parades. The chapel is known as Église Saint-Louis des Invalideswas finished in 1679. Napoleon I is burried at the Invalides, Louis-Philippe arranged for his remains to be brought to France in 1840 for his final resting place, a tomb made of red quartzite in 1861.
